;This study focuses on the children of intermarried families between Waishengren (Mainlanders) and Hakka in Taiwan, exploring their processes of ethnic identity construction and cultural exchange experiences. It aims to understand how, in a multi-ethnic society, children from interethnic families develop unique ethnic identities through the interaction of family culture, language use, social experiences, and gender roles. A qualitative research method was adopted, utilizing semi-structured in-depth interviews to collect and analyze the life narratives of seventeen individuals with both Waishengren and Hakka backgrounds.

The findings reveal: (1) Ethnic identity is not fixed but highly fluid and contextual. Participants adjusted their identity strategies based on different life stages and circumstances. (2) Language plays a crucial role in identity construction. Language proficiency and usage frequency significantly influence one′s sense of cultural belonging and strength of identification. (3) Political stance and ethnic identity do not exhibit a linear relationship. Participants demonstrated autonomy in developing perspectives different from their family backgrounds. (4) Gender and the caregiving roles within the family influence concepts of identity.

This study further identifies three identity patterns: single ethnic identity, dual identity, and fluid identity, illustrating the diverse and personalized forms of identification among children from intermarried families in Taiwan. The results not only highlight the uniqueness of individual life experiences but also reflect the trend of multicultural integration in Taiwanese society. Based on these findings, the study offers concrete recommendations for education, family life, government policy, and future research, with the aim of promoting ethnic understanding, cultural integration, and gender equality in society.
