;This thesis delves into the history of the Chinese diaspora, drawing from the rich genealogical records of the Hock Ting Line of the Hoon Hong Tohs of Nan’an, Fujian province, more commonly known as the Hock Ting Tohs. These records provide preliminary insights into the diaspora of the Hock Ting Tohs from mainland China. The central argument posits that the Hock Ting Tohs flocked to Taiwan and Southeast Asia, driven by rapid population growth in their original homeland. The thesis uses time as a framework, dividing the diaspora into two distinct phases: the first to Taiwan and the second to Southeast Asia. By statistically examining the Guangxu and Republican editions of the genealogical records of the Hock Ting Tohs, frequent migration to Taiwan was observed during the reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong and Jiaqing. This trend shifted to active migration to Southeast Asia from the reign of Daoguang to the Republican era. This thesis meticulously investigates the factors driving this migration, their evolution over time, the conditions in the original homeland and the migration destinations’ characteristics. It presents a comprehensive account of how the Hock Ting Tohs established themselves in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. The diasporic history of the Hock Ting Tohs from the Qing dynasty to the Republican era serves as a microcosm of the broader Chinese diaspora. It offers a unique perspective, demonstrating the diasporic history of civilian clans within a specific historical context. This perspective provides a macro observation of the Chinese diaspora over the past three centuries or so from the micro view of a clan’s migration history.
