;This study examines the transformations and innovations of Lianhuanhua Bao (Comic Pictorial) from 1980 to 1985, exploring how this prominent Chinese illustrated periodical navigated the tension between cultural diversification brought by the Reform and Opening-Up policy and stringent ideological control through editorial autonomy and innovative graphic strategies. Past scholarship has predominantly focused on the publication prior to its suspension in 1960, overlooking significant changes in its post-reform content, artistic approaches, and their relationship with the political and social environment. Based on archival materials, including 72 issues of Lianhuanhua Bao held by university libraries in Mainland China and Taiwan, supplemented by contemporary policy documents, this research employs historical textual analysis, visual narrative interpretation, and institutional historical approaches. It systematically examines thematic and narrative shifts ("discourse") alongside compositional techniques and artistic languages ("iconics"), to reconstruct the magazine’s struggle and adaptation in a period of dramatic transformation.

This thesis is organized into three chapters: the first reviews the historical development and editorial strategies of Lianhuanhua Bao; the second analyzes shifts from revolutionary narratives toward everyday concerns and individual stories; the third investigates the local adaptation of Western comic techniques. The findings reveal that during the early years of Reform and Opening-Up, Lianhuanhua Bao served not only as a product of shifting cultural policies but also as a crucial lens for understanding the interactions between mass media and ideological discourse in 1980s China.
