;In recent times, a newer and more advanced platform has emerged for artworks that focus on local discourse. Many artists express their concerns for society and the environment by showcasing the unique features of various regions in their works. Certain artworks are based on a special concept known as geographic mapping practice, which involves collecting and presenting documents, engaging with audiences, or experimenting with geographic technologies.

The integration of geographic information makes it possible for artworks to convey their spatiality even when they are displayed away from their original location. This enhances the positioning and recognition of the artwork, making it more effective. Cartography has now become a tool for artists to explore their relationship with the environment, including the cultural history and landscape of the local area. In Taiwan, there are several works related to "artists as cartographers" and local contexts. This thesis focuses on contemporary artworks with geographic attributes, starting with the presentation of works and gradually moving towards more complex topics, including the sampling of documents by point-type, using planar maps as narratives, and those that combine GIS technologies. It also explores the related topics of "displacement of body" and "methods of looking."

The first chapter concentrates on recognizable geographical features, such as natural landscapes and artificial objects that appear in artwork. It discusses the relationship between the artwork and the objects from two aspects - the original site and the exhibition site - and analyzes the use of geographic information in document arrangement. The second chapter selects three themes that represent Taiwan, and uses three different perspectives: city, forest, and faith, to focus on how artists use their actions and understanding of space through media such as maps to help audiences or participants shape new perceptual experiences. The third chapter extends the discussion by current geographic information technology, proposes examples of works that use relatively new geographic technology or digital technology. Through the three aspects: construction of archive, ways of perception, and sustainability of data, to explore the role and influence of technology in the geographical practice of contemporary art.
