;In response to the growing global concern over climate change, the fashion industry has emerged as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, the role of environmental education in influencing consumer behavior related to low-carbon clothing remains underexplored. This study aims to examine whether environmental education can effectively enhance public awareness and promote the consumption of green apparel, thereby contributing to individual carbon reduction efforts. Using a quantitative research approach, this study surveyed residents in northern Taiwan through a pre-test/post-test questionnaire design. Participants watched two educational videos—one on the environmental impact of fast fashion and another on carbon labeling—before completing a follow-up assessment. The questionnaire measured changes in environmental awareness, knowledge of international carbon reduction treaties, understanding of carbon labels, and willingness to choose low-carbon clothing. Data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and effect size calculations. The research results show that environmental education significantly improved participants’ average scores in areas such as environmental awareness, knowledge of international carbon reduction treaties, and understanding of carbon labeling. Participants also demonstrated a noticeable increase in their preference for green apparel. In addition, this study estimates that the behavioral changes observed among the 50 participants could lead to a total carbon reduction of 318.23 kg CO₂e. When extrapolated to the entire population with purchasing power in Taiwan in 2024, the projected annual national reduction in carbon emissions could reach approximately 95,469 metric tons of CO₂. Although this reduction may not be as dramatic as that achieved through dietary changes, it still represents a considerable and meaningful environmental benefit. This research highlights the critical role of environmental education in fostering sustainable consumer behavior within the fashion industry. It recommends strengthening educational initiatives targeting clothing consumption to support broader carbon reduction goals and inform green market development strategies.
