National Identity, Displacement, Independence and Skin Color: The Social Structure of Womanhood in Nayomi Munaweera’s Island of a Thousand Mirrors abstract: 本論文分析了納約米·穆納維拉（Nayomi Munaweera）的小說《千鏡之島》（Island of a Thousand Mirrors，2012），重點探討小說如何透過多位來自不同族群、社會與教育背景的女性主角來呈現女性形象。 ;This thesis examines Island of a Thousand Mirrors by focusing on the perspectives of its female characters and their lived experiences within Sri Lankan society. The study adopts a character-centered approach to analyze the formation of female identity in a context shaped by colonial influence and civil conflict. It argues that access to education was one of the most significant opportunities available to women during the British colonial period. Education enabled women to develop self-awareness, question traditional gender roles, and gain a sense of independence. The novel presents many female characters as educated and socially respected, reflecting the importance of education in shaping their identities and social positions. Characters such as Beatrice and Saraswathi highlight teaching as a key profession for women and demonstrate how education created new aspirations and social mobility. At the same time, the study acknowledges that colonial education did not fully dismantle patriarchal structures, and women’s progress remained limited by social expectations. Beyond individual character analysis, the novel encourages readers to recognize the shared resilience of Sinhala and Tamil women across different regions of Sri Lanka. The experiences of war, displacement, loss, and violence affect women from both communities in similar ways. Through its portrayal of women’s responses to conflict, the narrative promotes empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. The novel places women at the center of national history during the Sri Lankan civil war. Women’s identities are shown to be shaped by survival, responsibility, and moral strength. Despite enduring social and political challenges, female characters maintain autonomy and wisdom in their choices. Overall, this thesis argues that Island of a Thousand Mirrors presents female identity as a dynamic process shaped by education, resilience, and lived experience within a post-colonial and conflict-affected society.

<title>英治時期香港「家庭主婦化」的菲籍家庭勞工;“Housewifization” of the Filipino Domestic Workers in the British Hong Kong</title>
      <link>https://ir.lib.ncu.edu.tw/handle/987654321/97715</link>
<description>title: 英治時期香港「家庭主婦化」的菲籍家庭勞工;“Housewifization” of the Filipino Domestic Workers in the British Hong Kong abstract: 自1970年代以來，香港經歷了顯著的經濟增長，並逐漸成為全球重要的貿易中心。
;Since the 1970s, Hong Kong has seen significant economic growth and become an important trading centre globally. Due to a shortage of local domestic helpers and the increased demand of domestic care, the government legitimated the recruitment of foreign domestic helpers in 1973. This shift led to challenges for local employers who had to adapt to the cultural differences of their new employees, sometimes causing misunderstandings and conflicts. While several scholars have examined the intricate dynamics between local employers and these foreign helpers who mostly came from the South-east Asia, the deeper question of how these workers were historically institutionalized as a distinct category of labour in Hong Kong remains insufficiently addressed. By drawing on Stuart Hall’s theoretical framework of “Representation” and Maria Mies’s concept of “Housewifization”, this thesis examines how Filipino domestic workers were positioned within the shifting discourses of domestic labour in British Hong Kong.
Through the analysis of historical documents, including newspaper, government documents and media representation, I argue that these workers were constructed as a unique form of subordinate servant who inherited the imagined image of local amah of being “honest, loyal and hardworking”, while their status as contract-based migrant labourers was systematically obscured and denied. Thus, my thesis investigates how discourses surrounding Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong were produced by both societal discourse and governmental policies in the late twentieth century, constructing an idealized form of domestic labour that aligned with the demands of Hong Kong household and the imperatives of economic growth. By analyzing primary and secondary historical sources, including two English language newspaper, “South China Morning Post” and “Hong Kong Standard”, several Hong Kong Legislative Council official reports, mainstream media and previous publication, this research aims to understand the complexities of the transformation of domestic labour in the region that happened in the beginning of 1970. The study does not solely focus on Filipino domestic workers but also considers the importation of migrant workers in Hong Kong as crucial in shaping the post-war system of transnational domestic labour.

Rethinking the Practice of Coming Out in Contemporary Cultural Representation in Vietnam</title>
      <link>https://ir.lib.ncu.edu.tw/handle/987654321/97712</link>
Rethinking the Practice of Coming Out in Contemporary Cultural Representation in Vietnam abstract: ;Examining how the practice of coming out has been constructed based on progressive stances of LGBTQ-advocacy movements and how it has been popularized in the local context of Vietnam, this thesis will not only study the historical emergence of the practice of coming out in Vietnam but also complicating it by looking into the power relation in the confessional paradigm of coming out and its adaptation with Vietnamese socio-cultural traits. This study will also consider how to challenge the form of power in the confessional structure of coming out through different perspectives—via cultural representation of queer in the contemporary Vietnamese context. By looking at the selected texts of cultural representation, the thesis attempts to rethink the necessity of coming-out practice as a liberating means when the practice of coming out paradigm might entangle with the dilemmas in different cultural contexts, especially in such an Asian country as Vietnam where cultural values appreciated in parent-child bonding—coming-out becomes essential for not only claiming identity as individualism but also retaining that familial connection.

Aphasia Rooted in Indonesia 1965: Local Supremacy and Women’s Domestication in Soe Tjen Marching’s Writings</title>

Aphasia Rooted in Indonesia 1965: Local Supremacy and Women’s Domestication in Soe Tjen Marching’s Writings abstract:
;This thesis examines the combination of racial suppression, gendered oppression, and intergenerational trauma affecting Chinese Indonesian women during the New Order dictatorship, as analyzed in Soe Tjen Marching’s writings (including Dari Dalam Kubur novel and The End of Silence: Accounts of the 1965 Genocide in Indonesia). The novel exposes systematic racism, enforced assimilation, and patriarchal oppression through the narratives of Djing Fei, Karla, and Ira.
The analysis highlights the simultaneous erasure of ethnic and gender identity, illustrated by Djing Fei’s silencing and forced metamorphosis into Lidya Maria. It also examines acts of resistance, such as Djing Fei’s hidden diary and Ira’s restoration of her family’s history, which interrupt the cycle of pain. This thesis argues that the novel challenges historical injustices while highlighting the significance of storytelling in recovering underrepresented viewpoints and addressing structural oppression.
