Music always plays an important role in people’s life ever since the ancient times, especially the pop songs. Essentially, pop songs belong to category of music, but it is so popular and conveys the ideas inside the lyrics all around the world by singing songs. Thus, it influences contemporary people imperceptibly, and shoulders the responsibility of changing the social climate and civilizing the next generation. Chinese pop songs inherited the Shanghai style and integrated with the western style in early years, which then went through the reflection and reform in the 1970s, the diversification in the 1980s, and trends led by the powerful singers in the 1990s. Likewise, the Taiwanese pop songs were simple, melancholy and with Japanese style in early years, which then went through the reflection and interdicting in the 1970s, various attempts and innovations in the 1980s, and the integration of multi-languages and diversified music styles in the 1990s. As a result, the Taiwanese pop songs are accepted by more young people. Taiwanese pop music develops along with the different periods. Thus, learning the changes in Taiwanese pop songs also means learning what had happened in Taiwan, which is exactly the significance of studying the changes in pop songs.  This paper aims to analyze the development of politics, economy and society during the decades before and after the lifting of the Martial Law, as well as explore the changes in types and styles of Taiwanese pop songs during the said period. It hopes to understand various factors influencing the changes in pop songs and show the social conditions in Taiwan during that period.
