;This paper aims to explore the representation of colonialism in The Piano Tuner with reference to Heart of Darkness, another novel written more than a century ago, which shares similar themes and plot elements. Setting its background of British colonial Burma in 1886, The Piano Tuner was written by American author Daniel Mason, and published in the 21st century. As a contemporary novel about colonialism, The Piano Tuner employs the piano and Western musical culture as central elements, offering a distinctively fantastical and psychological perspective compared to the Victorian-era Heart of Darkness. By examining novel evolution, plot structure, themes, character interactions, and stylistic choices, this paper seeks to investigate the cultural dimensions of colonialism portrayed in The Piano Tuner and highlight its contrasts with Joseph Conrad′s Heart of Darkness.
