dc.description.abstract | Taiwan is a subtropical island state surrounded by sea and the climate is hot and rainy. To provide a comfortable driving environment for drivers, the freeway pavement is mainly paved with asphalt concrete. When moisture penetrates through the pavements, it is easy to produce pothole under the repeated action of traffic load. If the pothole isn’t repaired immediately, it would continually to expand. In that case, the safety of road users would be affected and driving comfort would reduce as well. This research collects four kinds of cold-mix asphalt materials. In order to understand the effectiveness and quality of them, we conducted laboratory quality inspection. Including effectiveness and freeway field tests. In the laboratory test part, this study used the method prescribed by the Japan Road Association “Pavement Survey and Test Method” to make Marshall specimens. Evaluation by stability test, indirect tension test, Cantabro test, Dynamic Stability etc. All result is verified by analysis of variance. The field test of the freeway is carried out at the mileage of 74 to 75 kilometer downbound Freeway No. 3. The pavement sweeper was used to create surface runoff for the purposes of simulating wet repair environment during rainy days and dry repair in sunny conditions. With the cooperation of the Northern Region Branch Office of the Freeway Bureau, MOTC, The cold-mix asphalt was tried to be used in emergency repair operations to test and track in usual. Later, the results of the laboratory and field tests are compared and analyzed to understand the applicability of cold-mix asphalt for emergency repair of freeway potholes. Finally, it is recommended to use open-graded cold-mix asphalt in rainy days. The construction analysis recommended to maintain the traditional repair method to avoid excessive working hours to interfere the traffic. As for the cost analysis, a new material is suggested to be add into repairing policy and during sunny days to achieve better economic benefits. | en_US |
