dc.description.abstract | In recent years, a noticeable increase in the proportion of women participating in politics in Taiwan. In 2016, Tsai Ing-wen became Taiwan’s first female president. This is the most symbolic representation of female political participation since Taiwan′s first female vice president appeared in 2000. The results of the 2018 local election, female county mayors have grown significantly from two seat to seven seats and the proportion of female councillors has reached a high of 33.66%. However, the situation of women participating in politics in some counties in Taiwan is not the same. In some places, snot only have no female councillors elected, but even have no female candidates. The situation in Taiwan is the most severe in Hsinchu County.
In response to the above phenomenon, this study selected Hsinchu County as the field site and used social capital as the main research concept. In addition to observing the local political culture of Hsinchu County, it also clarifies the social capital required in the political field of Hsinchu County and understands the role of gender in local political culture.
The results of the study found that among all social capitals, the most influential in the election of Hsinchu County was the clan capital. In addition, there are gender differences in political participation in Hsinchu County. No matter what social capital accumulation, female candidates have different ways and means than men. In addition, when women want to transform social capital into the political field, as long as they use the bridging strategy properly, they will also have an advantage, but this advantage may sometimes be more gender stereotyped at the same time. Transformation, placed in the local political structure, is not singular but intertwined and complex. | en_US |
