dc.description.abstract | In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become one of the most prominent topics in the global construction industry. The research and development of BIM in construction applications have progressed rapidly and extensively. To effectively conduct related research, it is necessary to fully understand the technological developments, knowledge dissemination, accumulation, and trends within this field. Therefore, this study analyzes BIM literature and patents to grasp the trends in technological advancements and knowledge dissemination within this domain.
This study aims to analyze the knowledge dissemination about BIM′s application in the construction industry by using Main Path Analysis (MPA). First, the research sample comprises 3,761 papers related to BIM′s application in the construction industry, sourced from the ISI Web of Science (WoS) database. As the analysis result through the global key-route main path analysis, we identified the trajectory of BIM′s application in the construction industry can be divided into four stages: 1) BIM standardization; 2) Integration of completed building projects using BIM; 3) BIM applications in precast construction projects; and 4) BIM applications in land management.
Additionally, Derwent Innovation′s patent database is collected from the United States Patent Database (USPTO). A total of 1,062 BIM-related patents are obtained to build a patent citation network. In addition, through a level 2 patent citation expansion, a total of 9,755 patents are obtained as subjects for this study. The Level 2 Expanded Patent Set is first analyzed using the main path of the overall key extension. The main path is composed of three streams: Stream I is used for the construction and application of 3D models, Stream II is used for the presentation of 3D images, and Stream III is used for the automatic analysis of architectural information. This study also uses edge-betweenness clustering for cluster analysis and conducts a more in-depth main path study of the specific patent clusters on the Level 2 Expanded Patent Set (main path). These groups are Energy Consumption Management Control, 3D Building Modeling for Design and Construction, Asset Tracking and Monitoring, and Security Monitoring. | en_US |
