dc.description.abstract | The importance of smart cities is being recognized because of rapid urban population growth in the past few years. Cities and governments are searching for smarter ways to solve potential crises that are caused by the excessive urban population. While new technology helps cities get smarter, researchers and policy makers have also started to pay attention to the topics of maintaining social, environmental and economic sustainability in smart cities since the ultimate goal of a smart city is to help improve citizens’ quality of life. In this thesis, topic analysis was conducted on the research articles between 2017 and 2021 from the Scopus database with the search keywords of smart city (smart cities), sustainable and sustainability. The research result shows the representative topics of each year from 2017 to 2021, where the most weighted articles of each topic were also identified. Based on the identified topics, research papers of smart cities and sustainability can be categorized into five topic genres, including (1) Urban, area and social planning and development related research, (2) Energy related research, (3) Data analysis and models related research, (4) Information technology application services related research, and (5) System and model framework related research. Trends and emerging research focus of each topic genre were summarized and discussed. The result of this research can provide topic development and identify emerging topics. Researchers, policy makers and practitioners can refer the research findings to have a better understanding of smart cities and sustainability research development and to plan ahead for emerging topics in this research area. | en_US |
