dc.description.abstractThis study designed plane fin arrays for the cooling of optical module connectors and provided a performance test of those heat exchangers. Four fin lengths (L = 15, 30, 45, 60 mm) were fabricated for wind tunnel testing and their heat transfer and pressure drop performance was compared. The test results show that the heating center temperature of each fin length is lower than the required 80 oC under different air velocities for heating rate from 5 W to 20 W. The optimal fin length varies depending on the wind speed, which is between 30 mm and 45 mm. While the heating rate is increased to 30 W, the 45 mm length fins provided the lowest heating center temperature at air velocities higher than 2 m/s. The resistance for air flows through a fin array increased with increasing air velocity and length of fins. Longer fins provide larger heat transfer area but also caused a higher flow resistance. This resulted in a lower air flow velocity for a fixed fan power fin array-fan assembly and degraded the overall heat transfer performance. The combination of these two effects caused the 30 mm to 45 mm long fins provided better heat transfer performance than shorter or longer fins.en_US
