dc.description.abstract | The safety of pedestrians crossing the street is the crux of the ongoing issue of the "pedestrian hell" phenomenon. To address pedestrian safety, the Executive Yuan approved the "Pedestrian Priority Traffic Safety Action Plan" on May 25, 2023. In addition to promoting driver courtesy through education, publicity, and enhanced law enforcement, the plan also suggests various traffic control measures, such as adjusting the timing of pedestrian signals to avoid conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, thereby reducing the risk of collisions.
However, most traffic accidents at intersections occur at night, highlighting the importance of improving visibility at intersections. Better visibility allows drivers to spot pedestrians earlier, giving them sufficient reaction time. This study found that under identical intersection conditions, white light creates greater contrast than yellow light. From a visual ergonomics perspective, different color temperatures affect the sensitivity of the human eye to bright and low-light conditions differently. Replacing intersection lighting with white light has proven to provide better reaction distances for drivers. This is currently the primary improvement measure implemented by the Taoyuan City Engineering Department at high-accident intersections. The combination of yellow light for road sections and white light for intersections helps reduce driver fatigue during long drives. The change in color temperature as drivers approach intersections alerts them to the upcoming area, encouraging heightened attention to the road ahead.
In addition to dual-color temperature streetlights, the study also measured the luminance of reflective tape in different colors under white and yellow light and analyzed various types of pedestrian crosswalks. This research aims to verify the optimal equipment combinations and provide recommendations for future streetlight designs. | en_US |
