dc.description.abstract | Founded in the late Qing Dynasty’’s by Li Boyuan, "Youxi bao" (1897-1910), a pioneering entertainment newspaper, has played an important role in promoting the entertainment industry in Shanghai, resulting the wave of organized entertainment newspaper.
Subsequently, Li Boyuan(李伯元) sold "Youxi bao"(游戲報) to others by 1901, to do another entertainment newspaper "Shijie fanhua bao"(世界繁華報) (1901-1910). He re-layout the tabloid of the newspaper, by clearly divided it into sections, and started irony novel series, "Gengzi guobian tanci"(庚子國變彈詞),"Guanchang xianxing ji"(官場現形記), which had influence of the dissemination of activities and modern literature, leisure reading among the general public, as well as promoting Shanghai entertainment industry.
This paper is to discuss having noticed of the growing demand in entertainment market, Li Boyuan founded the newspaper with both the commercial and entertainment characteristics, by combining the popular literature and art, entertainment and new media.
In this paper, multi-perspective analysis of strategies is used to interpret the innovative of Li Boyuan founded the newspaper’’s, from Shanghai city and literature, business report, news of ‘Hua-Bang’(花榜), and Western entertainment. Besides, this paper will also concern with the "modernity" business practices that Li Boyuan has taken in running the entertainment newspaper.
This paper is divided into six chapters. First chapter is to establish the research topic’s value, and to discuss the structure of the Xiaobao(小報). Chapter II will focused on the factors of the birth of Xiaobao(小報), and introduced the emergence of Xiaobao(小報).
Chapter III is to study the concept of both Li Boyuan’s newspaper to analyze the intent of the newspaper, as well as to discuss the innovative and the business strategy of both " Youxi bao" and "Shijie fanhua bao".
Chapter IV will discuss about the substance of ‘Hua-Bang’(花榜), as well as the benefits and business opportunities from it. Through the process of ‘Hua-Bang’(花榜), it is to understand the credibility establishment of a new media-type. It is also to explore the view of the Shanghai prostitutes’ in a public under the report of an author, and the implicit power relations in between.
In the V chapter, despite the wording of "entertainment", "daily life" in the title, it will mainly focus on discussing about things associated with the West that were present in " Youxi bao ". To the readers of " Youxi bao ", these entertainment news were not just playing a role of providing entertainment information, it is also a window for understanding the Western world, serving as knowledge transfer , and can be regarded as a kind of cultural enlightenment.
Chapter VI will be the conclusion and attempt to return the contention on a historical context. It will also to describe the deficiency of the study.
