dc.description.abstract | Taiwan is known as Formosa, but every year it also has many such natural disasters as typhoons and earthquakes taking place. It is the duty of the government and other civil bodies to protect the country and the people.
The natural disasters, such as typhoons or the earthquakes, still cannot be avoided by today’s technologies. Typhoons may be predictable to some extent, but predicting the occurrence of earthquakes is next to impossible. Given the potential damage of earthquakes and their unpredictability, earthquake insurance should be an important concern to many people living in an area of frequent earthquakes. This research, therefore, explores the issues of earthquake insurance. First, the study conducts a review of past major earthquakes occurred in Taiwan and the countermeasure that the government adopted, then it analyzes the current situations of earthquake insurance in Taiwan. The study reaches the following conclusions:
1. Given the earthquake’s potential disastrous effects, the populace must ponder what the effective ways are to low their damage and losses.
2. Because the earthquake’s unpredictability and its potentially disastrous effect, earthquake insurances should be different from the others.
3. Providing earthquake insurance is difficult in almost every stage of the service offering.
4. The goal of earthquake insurance is to decrease the financial losses of individuals and firms and to avoid the depletion of public purse.
5. Recognizing the importance of earthquake insurance can reduce the losses, at least financially, to a lower degree. Such insurance can help people restore their life faster, giving people greater dignity and the value.
