dc.description.abstract | This study investigated development of Taiwan’s Longtan Elementary School (Longtan Public School) during the Japanese occupation period, with primary focuses on its relations with local development, health conditions of the students, and career development of its graduates and teachers.
Data were collected from official sources, including Database of Taiwan Sotokufu, Taiwan Sotokufu Communiqué, Taoyuan County Chronology, newspapers such as Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo, and narratives of people of the time. In addition, Longtan elementary school’s logbooks and the registration data of students during 1901~1919 were also studied. The data were analyzed across variables, including parent’s occupation, residential area, student height, and weight.
The methodology was based on document analysis and interview. Through collection of historical literature and analysis of data by various variables, this study induced growth of Longtan Public School and changes in its students during the Japanese occupation period.
The survey on career development of the teachers and students showed that development of Longtan district was closely related to the operation of Longtan Public School. The dominant ethnic group in Longtan had high involvement in the operation of this school, in hope of giving better education to their offspring. It was also found that the health conditions of the students also improved with the change of government policy. However, local students were generally inferior in body build to Japanese students. | en_US |
