The aim of this study is to investigate the benefits of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system implementation on air cargo operation. In specific, the cost spent on and effi-ciency improved by the implementation of the RFID system are the major questions to be answered by this study. This study employed the case study method as the research method to investigate two individual companies from air cargo industry. In addition, observation and structured-interview methods were used to collect data to investigate the differences between pre- and post-RFID system implementation in these two companies.
The study results found that implementing the RFID system benefits for air cargo logis-tics operation. These benefits include: 1. enhancing process time control, 2. decreasing human errors, and 3. lowering personnel cost. Despite of the positive comments on the RFID system implementation found from the interviews, the system is too expensive and that limits adop-tion opportunity. By the same token, although the RFID system is the new generation of technology for air cargo logistics industry, this system is still not that attractive to the supply chain of related companies. At the meantime, the government seems to hold back on promot-ing the RFID system adoption because there are no compulsory regulations, financial incen-tives, or definite schedule for the implementation of RFID system. Even more, the implemen-tation of RFID system is very expensive and full of the format chaos. Under these circum-stances, it will not achieve the best demand of connecting the entire air cargo industry in the short time.
In conclusion, it is suggested that our government take a more active role in promoting the RFID system in the air cargo industry. Only by combining the related users of supply chain and bringing up the execution plan can maximize the benefits and being strategically competitive amid the world leading nations.
