The new product development (NPD) is coming to a new phase, cross-company design collaboration (CCDC), which is involving more than one enterprise to co-develop a new product. Collaborative design processes are an instrument which has been used in several industries. The design and development of complex engineering products require the efforts and collaboration of hundreds of participants from diverse backgrounds resulting in complex relationships among both people and tasks. Though the past studies have proposed a useful tool –Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to model the NPD process, however DSM focuses on the cross-functional interaction but rarely emphasizes on modeling a clear and understanding CCDC process model, this thesis proposed a new type of DSM which extends the traditional DSM from applying in cross-functional development to a higher level- CCDC, called Extended-DSM (E-DSM) to fill in the vacancy. In this thesis we first introduce the thesis background and motivation, then chapter 2 focuses on survey in two areas, includes new product development, business process re-design techniques. In chapter 3, we have an overview of CCDC, and introduce the design structure matrix, the main methodology we according to and use in E-DSM. Chapter 4 represents the main methodology we proposed- E-DSM, and we also apply it to an example of development of pneumatic control system. Finally, the conclusion and future research suggestions are made.
