The thesis proposes a methodological framework for the supervisory control of the failure modes of collaborative design process. The aim of the methodological framework is to permit design teams who: (1) are familiar with the process; (2) identify each of the main components of the process and determine functions of each of those components; (3) detect the potential failures of the design process; (4) take appropriate actions to eliminate or minimize the effects of these failures once the failure modes are identified. In this research, we integrate Multilevel Flow Modeling (MFM) with Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) to construct our methodology and provide their application for design of displays for the supervisory control of collaborative design process. MFM has been developed for the representation of goals and functions of complex process plant and it can be used as a basis for root cause analysis. PFMEA is a method that examines potential failures in products or processes and it may be used to evaluate risk management priorities for mitigating known threat-vulnerabilities. The third section of this paper is to describe proposed methodology. In the fourth section, MFM is used as a process modeling tool and its functions or components represent various design activities and design teams, and then we use PFMEA for process analysis. Additionally, we apply MFM and PFMEA to design a supervisory system for performing the tasks of collaborative monitoring and control in design chain. In the fifth section, a case study is presented to demonstrate our proposed methodology.
