; Even though engineering ethics has been emphasized in international accreditation systems, it is a new phenomenon in Taiwan. There still is an urgent need to disseminate the full range of engineering ethics contents and to establish performance expectations in order to maximize students』 learning effects in engineering ethics in Taiwan. Currently, the engineering ethics curriculum planning process does not anticipate a solid theoretical foundation driven by the social science faculty. The situations both in Taiwan and in Japan are similar that engineering ethics courses appear to be designed, delivered and 『owned』 by individual members of faculty, rather than managed holistically, as element components of an integrated educational experiences. Therefore, the goals of this international collaborative project are: (1) To learn from the successful models of German and Japanese ethics education regard to the steps of establishing the teaching and assessment mechanism for developing the engineering ethics curriculum in Taiwan; and (2) To create collaborative efforts through trans-disciplinary cooperation and trilateral networking. This international collaboration project spans over three-years. In the first year, the German social scientist Eckensberger』s theory will implemented to construct the research proposition and assessment framework on the contextualization of moral judgments in engineering ethics. The Principal Investigator between Germany and Taiwan will be joint planning of complementary methodological approaches to argue the feasibility of integrating Eckensberger』s model within the teaching and assessment framework of engineering ethics education in Taiwan. In the second year, the goal of this project is to establish a set of assessment tools for implementing assessment methodology in a systematic manner. A series of assessment tools will be considered and will be administered in a dynamic state; i.e., they will continue to be modified and updated as more is learned about their specificity and use in the third year. Finally, an interactive web-based teaching and assessment interface will be designed and construct in the third year based on the evaluation of results of the second year. It is worthwhile to note that this international collaboration project consists of experts in the field of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, social psychology and Education at universities such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt in Germany, Nagoya University in Japan, National Taiwan University, National Central University, and Oriental Institute and Technology in Taiwan. With the partnerships of the interdisciplinary researchers, this project wishes to demonstrate how our focus on teaching and assessing of engineering ethics curriculum may result in the quality assurance of engineering education in Taiwan.
