;This research project aims to study Taiwan Hakka Verein in Germany and the processes in which the members of this association construct their Hakka identity. Taiwan Hakka Verein in Germany established in 2005 an be seen as one of the first organizations set by Taiwan Hakka people in Europe. Notably, Hakka people migrated from Taiwan to Germany are different from Hakka decedents in Southeast Asia which are considered as one of the most important research subjects in the field of overseas Hakka in the Hakka scientific community in Taiwan. The difference is illustrated in terms of motivations of migration, migration history, social contexts. However, this research project can provide us of a comparative perspective for Hakka Studies in Taiwan, and similarities and differences of Hakka people. Among others, the bases on which Hakka identity is constructed and the processes in which Hakka people construct their identities are thus rendered visible. By drawing on literature review, participant observation, and in-depth interview in which life history is designed as the main research method, this proposed research project takes members of the association under study as the main research subjects. The members are mainly located in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg. Therefore these two cities will be the main field sites for this study. Three themes are going to be discussed in this project: the migration history of Taiwan Hakka living in Germany and the processes of their identity construction; the reasons for establishment of the association under study, and the relationship between motivations for set-up from within and from without; functions and events of the association. In conclusion, this proposed research project depicts a variety of facets of German-Hakka people in Germany and their cultural acculturation in Germany. In this sense, how to interpret, represent and employ Hakka elements is accorded importance. Meaning of Hakka and being Hakka is therefore constructed afresh.
