Various information technologies have been adopted in the manufacturing setting since the Industry 3.0 era. Production information systems have been used to track and manage all activities through out the entire production processes, especially for non-stop 24-hour operations in automated production lines. Real-time monitoring provided by the systems has been heavily relied upon to reduce human errors, and improve production efficiency. This study looks into the problem facing Company C, which runs a non-stop 24-hour automated production facility. Its production information systems were installed back in 2004, and have been outdated. Ongoing and regular maintenance work is the key for the systems to provide stable services to its operations. In 2014, Company C was notified by Oracle, the original computer vendor, that the computer hardware executing the production information systems would face the EOS (end of support) situation by the end of 2015. EOS means that spare parts for maintenance would no be available, apart from those in stock. Once the parts runs out, the original vendor could not provide any further maintenance services. The EOS problem faced by Company C is a critical potential risk factor for any plant with automated production lines. This study analyzed the related production information systems in Company C, and proposes a portfolio of action items to cope with the EOS problem. The solution was examined and found to be feasible.
