;In this paper, we mainly examine the relationship between returnee directors and supervisors and environment, social, and governance (ESG) performance of listed companies in Taiwan. Because Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) originated from European and American countries and was gradually added to the Taiwanese education system, returnees who study abroad put more emphasis on ESG, which is a standard for evaluating CSR. The sample of this paper consists of 9,044 observations across 1,717 listed companies between 2014 and 2019 from Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ). We discuss the three aspects of ESG separately. In terms of E, returnees have a negatively significant impact on carbon emissions and a positively significant impact on water recovery. In terms of S, returnees have a negatively significant impact on turnover and violations of Labor law and a positively significant impact on average salary. In terms of G, returnees show a positively significant relation with corporate governance evaluation, auditing by the Big Four firms, and the number of compensation committee meetings. From the empirical results, we find that returnees have a good impact on corporate ESG performance. It is very important that companies continually grow and contribute to society at the same time.
