;The confinement is a unique Chinese culture, and it condensed the wisdom of the ancestors.
The custom of confinement has been passed down to this day following its unique insights and
significance. The early Hakka group′s purpose for Confinement was to allow postpartum
women to use the method of Confinement and the diet prepared for the postpartum, so that the
postpartum women can regain their prenatal labor productivity in just one month; modern
Confinement is to restore prenatal physical strength and health.
For the Indonesian Hakka who belong to the same immigrant ethnic group as us, regarding
issues related to women’s birth and Confinement, varies with the times, the geographical
environment, and the differences in eating habits. Interracial marriages and the integration of
new ethnic cultures, etc. Will these reasons result in different fertility cultures and customs?
This thesis takes Taiwanese Hakka women and Indonesian Hakka women as the research
objects, and explores the comparative study of the confinement culture between these two
ethnic groups. To explores the comparison of diet, behavior, taboos and other cultures between
these two ethnic groups from pregnancy to confinement. The research method of this study uses
in-depth interviews and interview data to obtain first-hand interview data by snowballing.
The results of the study show that Taiwanese and Indonesian Hakka women of two
different nationalities hold the same view that the Hakka confinement culture is mainly derived
from the custom handed down in the Chinese society, and is not much different from the
Chinese confinement customs. The confinement culture also slightly changes the habits of
eating and behavior due to the geographical environment, region, climate, intermarriage with iii
different ethnic groups, and the integration of "entry as the customs" into the local culture. With
the evolution of the times, the advancement of medical treatment, and the establishment of
many institutions today, the custom of confinement may not be as particular as the earlier people,
but women can choose to confinement in a more scientific way that suits them, and during this
period may not be able to do whatever they want. Live a life without fail, but the essence of the
confinement culture is still passed on from generation to generation.
