;The development of Taiwanese comics started at Japanese rules period. The golden age of Taiwanese comics in the 1950s is interrupted in the wake of the intervention of censorship and its subsequent impacts; the Taiwanese comics had to face a decline more than ten years. The ephemeral prosperity in the 1990s means that Taiwanese Comics needs to find its proper way in the elaboration of content and the aspect of edition.

In the recent years, “the comic for adults” becomes an expression usually appears in advertising, which means that people have attaches important to the essence of comic. Despite its function of entertainment, a profound reading experience and the multiple narrative potential are pursued by whether the readers or the artists. After the Sunflower Student Movement, the generation of young artists desired to express their social and political conscience and, under this context, the documentary creation became a new wave of Taiwanese comics.

France is famous of the art of comics, and The International Festival of Angouleme is known as the most influential grand event of comic all over the world. By virtue of the international exchanges promoted by the Taiwanese government and the introduce by publishing houses of foreign comic masterpieces, the influence from the French culture to the Taiwanese comic is considerable.

In order to understand the development of Taiwanese documentary comics and how the French culture influence the Taiwanese works, this research conducted several interviews with editor, translator and artists of comics in Taiwan.

The works of Sean Chuang, Li-chin Lin and Pei-hsiu Chen represent their bond with themes such as childhood, nostalgia, politics or city, etc. Furthermore, Slowork Publishing has been dedicated to make “the documentary comics for adults”, of which both the internal content and external form are provided with artistic quality. By the power of reality, Slowork has linked the comics to readers and society and shows to public their posture of combat.

The results of Taiwanese documentary comics are profoundly influenced by France. Although they are still in an initial phase, The future of Taiwanese documentary comics is worth looking forward to.
