The current proposal is to proposal a follow-up study for the one-year project (NSC 99-2631-S-008 -003) entitled “Development of E-Book Learning Environments: An Ecology Theory Approach”. The proposed study aims to extend the results obtained from the project to the digital library context. The new study will be focused on the learning scenarios with digital books in the library because digital books may be widely used in by libraries in the near future. More specifically, we will focus on children’s need in the library because educators and researchers have indicated that digital media profoundly influence the cognition development of children. However, the current information environment of digital library does not fully address the need of children. For instance, the information searching interfaces are often designed from the perspectives of adults rather than according the need of children. It is necessary to provide a searching mechanism that can stimulate children’s motivation to read. In addition, how the digital books can be used to enhance the reading ability of children is still unclear. Therefore, the proposed study will examine how digital books can be used by children in the library. More specifically, the current project will investigate the research questions: (1) How can the information searching utilities of the digital library support children to search digital books? (2) How can digital books be used in the reading activities in the library to enhance children’s reading ability? (3) How can digital books be adaptive to the individual differences of children with different reading preferences? The results of this project may provide suggestions to parents, designers, educators and librarian so that they can understand how to use digital books for enhancing children’s reading ability and motivation.
