; Traditional training of doctoral students at universities has been based on academic research and teaching capabilities, which is mainly because most of them are aimed at enter academia job after graduation. However, as Taiwan move toward a knowledge-based economy, enterprises also need a large number of doctoral students to help them with the product development, efficiency and improvement of production process. Thus, the content of today's doctoral education should differ from traditional one. The purpose of this study is to investigate various employment issues of doctoral students in Taiwan.
This study is based on a report of the development of the PhD graduates graduating in 97 academic year from the integrated database of Taiwan's higher education, its purpose was to understand what doctoral students learn from school and their employability. Concerning the insufficient parts in the database, questionnaires were distributed to doctoral students at NCU for the purpose of understanding the gap between the ability of doctoral students and their employability. The results show that the content and the goal of higher education in Taiwan need to be changed, and doctoral students should be able to work for enterprises and to help them to improve their competitiveness. Our study also found that public universities enjoyed richer resources and better equipment than private ones, so graduates from public universities show higher employability and competitiveness then graduates from private schools.
