;Along with the newly advanced technology in recent years, employees are expected to excel at work by having a real-time response to the external environment and thus maintain their survival and competitiveness. As such, workload and working hours are piled up for employees who need to take care of their family and personal life at the same time. Employees’ physical and mental state are greatly challenged by the multiple-role expectations at work and in personal life. The exhaustion takes a toll on both employees’ well-being and organizations.
This study aims to explore the relationships among work stress, negative affect, employees’ creativity, job burnout and work-life balance. It also explores the effect of employee personality traits and usage of communicating software during off-duty times. Data are collected and analyzed through online survey from full-time employees. It is found that employees’ perceived stress is positively related to their negative affect. Negative affect is both negatively related to creativity and work-life balance, but positively related to burnout. In addition, core self-evaluation trait moderates the relationship between work stress and negative affect. Drawn on the findings, managerial implications and suggestions for future research are thus discussed.
